Let’s go over a hypothetical here.
Let’s say that you, unaware of your personal feelings or opinions or how they might affect other people, publicly shared something that you believed to be accurate or true, and something that resonated with you personally, not understanding the larger underpinnings or ramifications of the material in question. Let’s say that you endorsed something that you didn’t understand was deeply offensive to an entire group of human beings and rooting in a centuries-old bigotry.
Let’s say that, after you publicly sharing and endorsing this thing, you were told in explicit terms by the offended group of people why the thing you did was wrong and offensive.
Let’s say that after THAT happened, your direct supervisor released a public statement condemning what you did. He didn’t call you into his office or dock your pay or whatever, but he stood up in front of the office and said, “What Dave did was fucked up, and I’m upset that Dave did the thing.”
Let’s say that after you were publicly dressed down, the CEO of your company released a statement saying that he ALSO thinks that Dave did an extreme double-backflip no-hands dumbfuckery, and that he’d be calling Dave to HIS office for a meeting.
Let’s say that after THAT statement came out, you held a press conference and after many questions just said “No, I am Dave, and I am entitled to my opinion. Thank you.”
Let’s say after your press conference, your company announced that they were suspending you indefinitely, due to the very dumb and offensive thing you did.
At what point in this chain of events might you think you would be best served just apologizing and trying to learn about why what you did was offensive and try to do better going forward?
HINT: It is nearer the beginning of this timeline than toward the end of it.
I hope this completely hypothetical thought experiment was helpful to some of you. ESPECIALLY TO YOU, DAVE.
Hello, welcome to the newsletter! Starting next week I am going to try to start doing about three of these a week. At some point I will be turning on monetization, thinking something like $5 a month.
I’ll be writing about all sorts of things, not just completely hypothetical things like above.
A portion of things I’m interested in writing about:
The underappreciated Luke Cage (both in live action and in the comics)
The whole CM Punk thing
Collectors separating art from artist a little TOO much
The aggressive unpleasantness of the film Anger Management
1980s film and its fascination with adultery
Combined no-hitters: MORE impressive than regular no-hitters?
Golden State Warriors what is you doin baby
Thanks for giving me a chance to mail words to you! Hope you like them!
